The Serving Hero

By Chris Krok

“ You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and will bring you back from captivity.”

Jeremiah 29:13-14a

hat if I never asked? What if I never called? Where would I be today? How much more would I be living in fear? How much less of a good husband would I be? How much worse of an employee, a neighbor, or a father would I be? The list can go on and on.

Thankfully, I’ll never know what my life would have been like had I not sought outa mentor to help me. I’ve always craved the right man to mentor me, but it took persistence. Over the years, I’ve found Christian friends and older Christian men who were always willing to help, but not until God gave me Reed Ashwill, my godly hero, did I find that perfect mentor.

My marriage has thrived, my kids have grown, and most importantly, I have changed. I have become more like Jesus through this mentorship. I’ve been shown how to serve others, how to give generously, and how to be the husband and father God wants me to be.

I do not understand how other men make it without at least one godly man, one hero, in their life, pouring into them, giving them the wisdom and encouragement they need.

Over the years, I’ve thought “How is it he knows exactly what to do and say in these situations? How is it that he’s like me in so many ways?” God meant him for me. God blessed me after years of searching and praying for the right man, who was not only the right guy, but was willing. And heroes are willing. Can you imagine your hero telling you he was “busy” when you call-in your hour of need?!

Reed’s taught me to be available to other younger men, too. I want to be Reed, a hero, for other young men.

I’ve also thought, more than once “What will I do when I can’t call him anymore? What will I do when I can’t see him anymore?” I selfishly want to hold on to my time with him forever. However, I know what he wants.

It’s what he always points me to: He wants me to be more like Jesus. . . it’s who he always strives to be like. And Jesus should be a hero to all of us.
I urge you to find your godly mentor. There are many at this church.
