Come as a Child

This year in February, I received the greatest gift ever. I got the joy and honor of becoming an aunt for the first time to the most adorable little girl. (Yes, I am biased.) Even though this year has been nothing short of difficult, the happiness and joy that that little girl has brought to me and our family has made 2020 the best year ever. I am so excited for all of the holidays and birthdays and milestones in her life to come because in a way, I get to relive the fun and excitement of life through the eyes of a child.

Is there anything in this world greater than waking up on Christmas morning as a child? Think back to those memories. Nothing was more important than Christmas morning. The anticipation and excitement were so overwhelming you could hardly sleep at all the night before. There is so much magic and wonder and possibility that fills the souls of children during Christmastime. It is truly special.

Matthew 18:3-4 says, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Children are so dependent on their parents every day for their survival. My niece was born six weeks early and spent the first few weeks of her life in the NICU. Her survival was dependent on the constant care and support of her mom, dad, and the incredible doctors and nurses who cared for her. God asks us to become as dependent on Him as a baby is on its parents to survive.

Children have an innocence about them that Christ tells us to become more like when it comes to our faith. Christ literally tells us to “change” and become more and more like the little children, who live life not caring about the bills they will have to pay one day, or what other people will think about what shoes they are wearing. No, children dream big and live every day to the fullest.

Can you imagine if every day, we as Christians woke up and approached our heavenly Father with the excitement, joy, and happiness of a child waking up on Christmas morning? What a wonderful life we would all live! Fully trusting in God to provide for all of our needs and care for us with His great love that surpasses all understanding.
