Christmas Devotional | 2018 - Day 1

Angels

By Pam Brewer

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.’”

Luke 2:13-14

Christmas! It is our most favorite and busiest time of year with all the excitement and expectations of wonderful moments surrounded by friends, family, and music! This is the time of year when I search for the time to attend a concert, sit at the piano, pull out the CDs or iTunes, and sing along with the radio. My favorite Christmas carol is “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” That song reminds me of the miracle and wonder of the birth of Christ and how the angels must have been amazed at all they witnessed.

This is when I consider God’s profound and perfect thought in the creation and use of His angels. Handel’s “Messiah” puts a memorable melody to Luke 2:13-14: “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.’” Luke 1-2 gives us the best description of how God used His angels in the telling of the birth of Jesus Christ. In fact, angels are mentioned no less than fifteen times in these two chapters.

In Luke 1, we read how the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be used to birth the “Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:30-35). Chapter two tells us of that wonderful moment when the hosts of angels were called upon to announce and worship the One for whom they were created. Those angels chose to serve God in anticipation of this very moment.

It is humbling to know that angels look on man with wonder because of the grace that God offers us. Grace is one of the distinctions that separates man and angels. It makes our flippant attitude about Christ’s offer seem so much more sinful. And to realize that angels exist only to carry out the plans of God with joyful, immediate responses makes me wonder why I spend so much time questioning God’s plans for me.

As we launch into another Christmas season, I pray that you will join me as I look at the angels’ example and consider the wonderful gift of grace that is offered to us through Jesus Christ, the Son of the Most High. Now that is a gift worth sharing!
