Christmas Devotional | 2018 - Day 10

Holy

By Josh Morris

“There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.”

1 Samuel 2:2

Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright. By now, you probably have the tune playing in your head. “Silent Night” is one of the foundational Christmas songs that you likely have looping in the background as you and your family begin to ramp up this holiday season. We often times sing the song, but many Christians (including myself), are guilty of never taking the time to stop and ponder the meaning behind the lyrics.

If you read this hymn from start to finish, one particular word jumps off the page again and again: holy. Just think about the lyric: “Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight…Silent night, holy night. Son of God, love’s pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face. With dawn of redeeming grace.” The word holiness can best be understood as being completely set apart, or unique. Just like Moses’ brother, Aaron, was set apart or made unique in his service to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people of God (1 Chronicles 23:13), so we see something special and unique about the coming of Christ two thousand years ago on that silent night.

If Aaron was set apart, or holy, for his duty to offer sacrifices, how much more holy is God’s Righteous Lamb, slain before the foundation of the world? Can you feel something unique about that silent night? The perfect Son of God, in all of His radiance, left His heavenly throne and became an infant in a manger to save people such as us. The silent night was holy because of the holy One that entered the world.

This Christmas season, let holiness be less of a theological study, and more of a meditation that you simply soak in as you contemplate that two thousand years ago, something unique happened. The God of the entire universe implemented His plan to burst onto the scene and make a way to reconcile people to Himself. God, in all of His holiness, loved us so much, that He sent His Son to offer us redeeming grace. “Silent night, holy night. Son of God, love’s pure light.”
